What are the storage conditions for THPC?

THPC is a highly reactive phosphorus-based compound primarily used as a flame retardant, biocide, and in textile treatments. Due to its chemical nature, proper storage is critical to maintain stability and safety.

✅ Recommended Storage Conditions

1. Temperature & Environment

Ideal Temperature: 15–25°C (59–77°F)

Acceptable Range: 5–30°C (41–86°F)

Avoid: Freezing (<5°C) or prolonged exposure to high temperatures (>40°C), which may cause degradation.

2. Container Material

Best: Plastic (HDPE or PP) or glass-lined steel tanks (resistant to corrosion).

Avoid: Uncoated steel, aluminum, or copper (THPC is acidic and can corrode metals).

3. Light & Moisture Control

Store in a dark place (UV exposure can degrade THPC).

Keep tightly sealed to prevent moisture absorption (hygroscopic) and oxidation.

4. Ventilation & Segregation

Ventilated, dry area (avoid humid or condensation-prone environments).

Separate from:

Oxidizers (e.g., peroxides, chlorates – risk of violent reaction).

Strong bases (e.g., NaOH – can decompose THPC).

Food, feed, and pharmaceuticals (toxicological risk).

❌ Prohibited Storage Practices

Do not store near heat sources (e.g., boilers, direct sunlight).

Never mix with incompatible chemicals (see above).

Avoid long-term storage in diluted form (more prone to degradation).

⚠️ Stability & Shelf Life

Unopened, properly stored: 6–12 months (check manufacturer’s guidelines).

Opened containers: Use within 3–6 months; reseal tightly after each use.

🔥 Fire & Safety Precautions

Non-flammable, but decomposes at high temps (>200°C), releasing toxic gases (e.g., formaldehyde, phosphine).

Spill response: Absorb with inert material (e.g., sand), neutralize with alkali (e.g., sodium carbonate), and dispose of as hazardous waste.

🚚 Transportation

Classified as Corrosive (UN 3267, Class 8).

Transport in HDPE containers with proper hazard labeling.

Avoid extreme temperatures during transit.

🔍 Signs of Degradation

Color change (clear to yellow/brown).

Precipitation or gel formation.

pH shift (normal pH: 3–5; if >6, may indicate decomposition).

If degradation is suspected, do not use—consult the supplier for testing.

Note: Always refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for specific storage guidelines from your supplier.
