Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) is a water-soluble organophosphorus compound with the CAS number 124-64-1 and molecular formula C₄H₁₂ClO₄P (molecular weight ~190.56) . It is typically supplied as an aqueous solution (e.g., 80% in water) .
Primary Applications
Textile Flame Retardancy: This is a classic and major use. THPC reacts with ammonia or urea to form a cross-linked polymer network on cellulose fibers (e.g., cotton), imparting durable flame-retardant properties. The "Proban" process is a well-known industrial example of this chemistry .
Water Treatment & Oilfield: It serves as a biocide for water systems and a scale-remover in the oil industry. In membrane technology, it has been explored as a modifier to tune polyamide membrane structures for dye/salt separations .
Crosslinking Agent: In biomedical research, THPC is used as an amine-reactive crosslinker for protein-based hydrogels (e.g., gelatin). Its reaction with amines releases formaldehyde as an intermediate, which is a key consideration for cytocompatibility .
Leather & Paper: It acts as a tanning agent in the leather industry and a flame retardant for paper products .
Key Safety and Handling Considerations
Formaldehyde Release: A critical issue. THPC itself can act as a reservoir for formaldehyde, especially under certain pH conditions or when reacting with amines. This influences its toxicity profile and requires attention in applications involving human contact or biological systems .
Skin Irritation: Animal studies show that concentrated aqueous THPC (15–30%) can cause moderate to severe skin irritation, necrosis, and hair loss. However, fabric treated with THPC-based flame retardants was generally non-irritating in human patch tests .
Handling: Due to its reactivity and potential to release formaldehyde, appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles) and good ventilation are recommended when handling the concentrated solution.
