Use of 1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid tetrasodium salt (HEDP•Na4 granules) in consumer chemical products

HEDP·Na₄ (tetrasodium salt of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid) in consumer chemical products functions almost exclusively as a chelating agent and builder, primarily in laundry and cleaning formulations. Its role is to sequester metal ions (calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.) that would otherwise interfere with surfactants or cause scaling, and to support the cleaning action of the main detergent components.

Primary Application: Detergents and Cleaning Products

The most concrete evidence comes from detergent patents and industry sources. HEDP and its sodium salts are classified as co-builders in detergent formulations, with the tetrasodium salt specifically noted for its alkaline reaction (pH ~9) . Among phosphonates, HEDP is described as "preferably used as a builder" .

A recent Procter & Gamble patent explicitly names the tetrasodium salt of HEDP as a suitable chelating agent for detergent compositions, with typical inclusion levels of 1.0–5.0 wt% of the total composition, or 2.5–6.0 wt% of the solid component . Chinese cleaning industry sources list HEDP·Na₄ solid among phosphonate products for use in household detergents, industrial cleaners, cosmetics, personal care products, and electronic cleaning agents, with the stated function of chelating various metal ions .

Secondary Consumer-Adjacent Uses

Beyond detergents, HEDP·Na₄ appears in a few other consumer-relevant contexts, though the evidence is less specific:

Personal care and cosmetics: Listed alongside HEDP as a chelating agent for cosmetics and personal care products in Chinese cleaning industry tables . In practice, this would likely mirror its detergent role: stabilizing formulations by sequestering trace metals that could catalyze degradation or cause discoloration.

Bar soap: A patent example uses HEDP-4Na at 0.3–0.5 wt% in bar soap compositions, primarily as a comparative baseline against a Zn-HEDP complex for reducing discoloration . This confirms its compatibility with solid soap formats, though the patent's focus was on the improved complex, not HEDP alone.

What It Does Not Appear to Be Used For

Search results do not support HEDP·Na₄ as a direct consumer-facing product ingredient in categories like food, oral care, or pharmaceuticals. Its consumer chemical role is confined to formulated detergents and cleaners, where it operates as a functional additive rather than an active cleaning agent itself.

Practical Note

The tetrasodium salt is alkaline (1% solution pH 10–12) , which distinguishes it from the disodium salt (neutral). In consumer formulations, this alkalinity may be either an asset (contributing to detergency in alkaline cleaners) or a constraint (requiring pH adjustment in neutral products). Its high water solubility and non-hygroscopic solid form make it convenient for powder and tablet formats .
