Polyamino Polyether Methylene Phosphonic Acid (PAPEMP) is distinguished by its high calcium tolerance, making it exceptionally effective in severe water conditions where conventional phosphonates fail.
Superior Scale Inhibition at Extreme Conditions
Its core advantage is the ability to inhibit scale under high hardness, high alkalinity, high pH, and high concentration multiple conditions.
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃): PAPEMP remains effective even at extremely high calcium concentrations and supersaturation levels. One comparative data point shows it can tolerate over 40,000 mg/L of calcium without precipitating, while maintaining 100% inhibition efficiency, far surpassing HEDP and other common inhibitors in the same test.
Calcium Sulfate (CaSO₄) & Calcium Phosphate: It provides excellent inhibition for these scales as well. For instance, the concentration required to completely inhibit CaSO₄ scale can be as low as 0.5 mg/L.
Silica Scale: Unlike many traditional phosphonates, PAPEMP can also effectively inhibit the formation of silica scale.
Excellent Dispersing & Metal Stabilizing Power
Dispersion: It exhibits excellent dispersing performance for iron oxides (Fe₂O₃), iron hydroxide (Fe(OH)₃), and zinc hydroxide (Zn(OH)₂), making it suitable for systems with high iron content and turbidity.
Stabilization: It effectively stabilizes metal ions such as Zn, Mn, and Fe, preventing them from forming precipitates.
Thermal Stability & Low Environmental Impact
Thermal Stability: PAPEMP demonstrates great performance in withstanding high temperatures. In one study for pre-salt oilfield applications, a PAPEMP-based inhibitor showed excellent long-term performance at temperatures up to 135 °C.
Lower Phosphorus Content: Compared to other phosphonates, it contains less phosphorus, which poses a lower environmental risk.
Synergistic Effect in Formulations
It has good synergistic effects with other water treatment chemicals like HPAA and ATMP, and can be formulated with polymers such as AA/AMPS or used in green composite inhibitors with PASP and Zn²⁺ for enhanced performance.
In summary, PAPEMP is designed for challenging water systems—like high-hardness cooling water, reverse osmosis, and oilfield produced water—where traditional scale inhibitors would be ineffective or cause precipitation.
