Dioctyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride (D0821) is a "third-generation" twin-chain quaternary ammonium compound. Its primary use is as a low-foaming, high-efficiency biocide for water treatment and disinfection, where foam control is critical.

Primary Use: Low-Foam Biocide in Water Systems

D0821 is specifically designed for recirculating water systems where excessive foam is problematic. Unlike conventional quaternary ammonium biocides, its twin-chain structure provides potent antimicrobial action with controlled, fast-breaking foam.

Target Microorganisms: It is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae, with h3 performance even in hard water and high organic soil loads.

Key Applications: It is widely used as a bactericide for oilfield injection water and industrial circulating cooling water to prevent biofouling and equipment corrosion.

Secondary Uses Across Industries

Beyond water treatment, its cationic surfactant properties make it useful in several other fields:

Textile & Leather: Functions as a fiber softener, antistatic agent, and moth-proofing agent.

Personal Care: Used in hair conditioners and skin care as a cationic conditioning agent to improve feel, and as a fungicide/softener in formulations.

Hard Surface Disinfection: Can be formulated into disinfectants and sanitizers. It is also noted for being compatible for use with chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) for hard surface treatment.

Industrial Additives: Serves as a corrosion inhibitor and can be used as an emulsifier in various industrial processes.

Appearance & Form: Typically supplied as a clear, pale yellow to straw-colored liquid with active content of 48–52% or 78–82%.

Safety: It is a chemical intermediate. Avoid contact with eyes and skin; flush with water if contact occurs.

Storage: Store in a shady, dry, well-ventilated area. The shelf life is generally one year under proper conditions.
