The Functions of Phosphorous Acid (PAC)

Although the acronym PAC is commercially used by some suppliers to refer to Phosphorous Acid Crystal (or Orthophosphorous Acid), note that in general industrial chemistry, PAC almost universally refers to Polyaluminum Chloride (a water coagulation agent).

Assuming the context is Phosphorous Acid (H3PO3, also known as phosphonic acid), its primary functional roles across industrial manufacturing, agriculture, and water treatment include:

1. Synthesis Precursor for Water Treatment Phosphonates

One of the most critical industrial applications of phosphorous acid is serving as the core starting material for synthesizing organophosphonates.

ATMP, HEDP, and PBTC: Phosphorous acid undergoes Mannich-type reactions (with formaldehyde and amines/carboxylic acids) to produce high-performance phosphonate chelating agents.

Scale & Corrosion Control: These derivative phosphonates act as threshold inhibitors, bin
