Silicone defoamers (also known as silicone-based antifoams) are highly effective foam control agents primarily composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fluids, often combined with hydrophobic silica. They excel due to their extremely low surface tension, chemical inertness, thermal stability, and ability to function at very low dosages (typically 10–100 ppm). These properties make them suitable for both aqueous and non-aqueous systems, as well as a wide range of temperatures and pH levels.
Key Advantages in Applications
Rapid foam knockdown and long-lasting prevention (antifoam action).
Effective in high-shear, high-temperature (up to ~400°C in some cases), acidic, or alkaline environments.
Low usage rates reduce costs and minimize interference with the final product.
Versatile formulations: emulsions (water- or oil-based), compounds, fluids, powders, or self-emulsifying types.
