HEDP•K2

HEDP•K2 (also known as dipotassium 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonate or potassium salt of etidronic acid) is the potassium salt of HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid). It functions as a highly effective scale inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor, and chelating agent, similar to the sodium salts (HEDP•Na2 and HEDP•Na4) but with distinct advantages tied to the potassium cation.

Key Properties

CAS numbers: Commonly 67953-76-8 (for the salt) or related variants like 21089-06-5.

Formula: Approximately C₂H₆K₂O₇P₂ (varies slightly with hydration).

Appearance: Typically supplied as an aqueous solution (e.g., 30–50% active) or solid.

pH: Near-neutral to mildly alkaline in solution — less acidic than the free HEDP acid and different from the h3ly alkaline HEDP•Na4 or weakly acidic HEDP•Na2.

Solubility: Excellent water solubility, often higher than sodium salts at neutral pH, reducing precipitation risks.

Advantages: Avoids sodium ion buildup (beneficial in certain systems); potassium can be neutral or advantageous; good thermal/chemical stability; h3 chelation of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺, etc.; effective crystal distortion and threshold inhibition for scales like calcium carbonate and sulfate.

It works via chelation, adsorption on metal surfaces (forming protective films), and dispersion mechanisms.

Main Application Fields

HEDP•K2 is versatile and overlaps significantly with other HEDP forms, but its potassium base makes it preferable in specific scenarios:

Industrial Water Treatment (primary use):

Circulating cooling water systems and cooling towers.

Low/medium-pressure boilers.

Desalination plants and RO systems.

Prevents scale formation and provides corrosion protection, improving heat transfer efficiency and equipment longevity.

Oil & Gas / Oilfield:

Water injection systems and pipelines.

Scale squeeze treatments to prevent downhole scaling.

Swimming Pools and Recreational Water:

Antifouling and stain prevention agent (controls iron, manganese, and calcium deposits without adding excess sodium).

Metal Cleaning and Surface Treatment:

Metal corrosion inhibitor.

Container/volume cleaning, iron dust control, metal pretreatment, and oxide/scale removal.

Personal Care and Cosmetics:

Chelating/stabilizing agent in shampoos, liquid soaps, shower gels, creams, hair dyes, bleaches, and sunscreens.

Inactivates metal ions that cause clouding, instability, or degradation of formulations.

Detergents and Cleaners:

Industrial and household formulations for scale control and chelation in hard water.

Other Fields:

Textiles: Peroxide stabilization and metal control in dyeing/bleaching.

Papermaking/Pulp: Scale control in process water and potential use as a chelant/stabilizer in bleaching (though sodium salts are more commonly referenced; HEDP salts in general support wet-end water treatment and peroxide stages).

Agriculture: Emerging or niche use in irrigation systems (avoids sodium accumulation in soil).

Construction/Materials: Occasionally in specialized systems (e.g., modifiers for certain cements or foamed materials, often in combination with other potassium compounds).

Comparison with HEDP•Na2 and HEDP•Na4

HEDP•Na2: Weakly acidic; suited for acidic/neutral systems or where minimal pH shift is needed.

HEDP•Na4: Strongly alkaline; preferred for high-pH cleaning, boilers, or peroxide stabilization.

HEDP•K2: Higher solubility at neutral pH, no sodium buildup; chosen when potassium is beneficial or when sodium sensitivity exists (e.g., certain water systems, agriculture, or personal care). Performance as a scale/corrosion inhibitor is comparable, with good synergy alongside polymers like PAAS (sodium polyacrylate) for dispersion or PBTC for stressed/high-hardness conditions.

In your ongoing context of papermaking additives (alongside PAAS, HEDP salts, and PBTC), HEDP•K2 can support scale/deposit control in recirculating process water and act as a metal chelant in peroxide bleaching, helping maintain brightness by sequestering catalytic metals (Fe, Mn, Cu). It complements PAAS (for pigment/filler dispersion) in coating or wet-end applications.

Typical Dosage: 1–10 ppm for scale inhibition in water systems; higher in cleaning or personal care formulations. Always optimize via jar tests or mill trials based on water chemistry, pH, hardness, and temperature.

Handling: Generally stable; less corrosive than the acid form but still requires PPE for eye/skin protection. Compatible with many biocides and other water treatment chemicals.

If you're evaluating HEDP•K2 for a specific use (e.g., papermaking wet-end, cooling water with certain conditions, formulation with PAAS/PBTC, or comparison to sodium salts), provide more details like target pH, water quality, or system type for more tailored insights. Supplier technical data sheets and compatibility testing remain essential.
