What fields are HEDP•Na4 Granule mainly used in?

HEDP•Na4 Granules (Tetrasodium Etidronate Granules) are a solid, granular form of a widely used phosphonate scale and corrosion inhibitor. Their main applications leverage their ability to chelate metal ions and inhibit the formation of scale, making them critical in several industrial fields.

Here are the main fields where HEDP•Na4 Granules are primarily used:

1. Water Treatment (The Largest Application)

This is the most significant and common use for HEDP•Na4. It is a cornerstone of modern industrial water treatment programs.

Cooling Water Systems: Used in open recirculating cooling towers and closed-loop systems to prevent the formation of scale (primarily calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate) on heat exchanger surfaces. Maintaining clean heat transfer surfaces is crucial for energy efficiency and preventing equipment failure.

Boiler Water Systems: Added to low- and medium-pressure boiler systems to inhibit scale formation and control sludge. Scale in boilers can lead to overheating, reduced efficiency, and potentially dangerous tube failures.

Mechanism: It acts as a threshold inhibitor, meaning it can prevent scale precipitation at concentrations significantly lower (e.g., 1-10 mg/L) than the stoichiometric amount of the scaling ions. It does this by distorting crystal growth, making scale soft and non-adherent.

2. Detergents and Cleaning Agents

Builder and Chelating Agent: It is used as a substitute for phosphates (e.g., STPP) in non-phosphate or low-phosphate detergents and cleaning formulations. It "softens" water by sequestering calcium and magnesium ions, which would otherwise interfere with the cleaning action of surfactants. This improves cleaning efficiency for fabrics, dishes, and hard surfaces.

Stabilizer for Peroxide Bleaches: HEDP•Na4 stabilizes hydrogen peroxide in liquid bleach formulations, preventing its rapid decomposition and thus maintaining bleaching efficacy for longer periods.

3. Oilfield Industry

Scale Inhibition in Production: Injected into oil and gas wells or downhole during production to prevent the deposition of inorganic scales (e.g., barium sulfate, calcium carbonate) in the wellbore and production tubing. This is critical for maintaining flow assurance and maximizing production output.

Chelant in Well Stimulation: Used in acidizing and fracturing fluids to control iron precipitation and prevent scaling issues that can damage the formation.

4. Industrial Cleaning

Metal Cleaning: Used in formulations for cleaning metal surfaces to prevent redeposition of soil and minerals and to inhibit corrosion during the cleaning process.

Equipment Descaling: While often used for prevention, it can also be a component in chemical descalers to help remove existing scale deposits.

5. Textile and Pulp & Paper Processing

Peroxide Stabilizer: Similar to its role in detergents, it is used to stabilize hydrogen peroxide bleaching baths in the textile and pulp & paper industries, ensuring a controlled and effective bleaching process.

Chelator: Prevents metal-ion-catalyzed decomposition of bleaching agents and avoids the formation of unwanted stains on fabrics or pulp.

6. Personal Care Products

Chelating Agent: Used in small amounts in shampoos, liquid soaps, and other personal care products to sequester metal ions. This improves product stability, prevents rancidity, and enhances the performance of preservatives.

Advantages of the Granular Form:

Ease of Handling: Granules are typically dust-free, easier to measure, and safer to handle compared to fine powders.

Stability: The solid form is highly stable for long-term storage.

Solubility: Despite being solid, HEDP•Na4 granules dissolve rapidly in water to form a clear solution ready for use.
