Physical properties of DTPMPA

DTPMPA is a widely used phosphonic acid-based scale and corrosion inhibitor in water treatment. Below are its key physical properties:

1. General Information

Chemical Name: Diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid)

Synonyms: DTPMP, DTPMPA, Dequest 2060/2066

CAS Number: 15827-60-8

Molecular Formula: C₉H₂₈N₃O₁₅P₅ (for the acid form)

Molecular Weight: ~573.2 g/mol (acid form)

2. Appearance & Form

Physical State: Clear to pale yellow liquid (commercial form is often aqueous solution)

Color: Colorless to light yellow

Odor: Odorless or mild acidic smell

3. Solubility

Water Solubility: Highly soluble in water

Solubility in Organic Solvents: Poor in most organic solvents (e.g., ethanol, acetone)

4. Density & pH

Density: ~1.35–1.45 g/cm³ (for 50% aqueous solution)

pH (1% Solution): ~1.5–2.5 (h3ly acidic)

5. Thermal Stability

Decomposition Temperature: >200°C (stable under normal water treatment conditions)

Performance: Effective in high-temperature applications (e.g., boiler water treatment)

6. Chemical Stability

Resistance to Hydrolysis: Stable under acidic and alkaline conditions

Oxidation Resistance: Degrades slowly in the presence of h3 oxidizers (e.g., chlorine)

7. Commercial Availability

Typically supplied as 50–60% aqueous solution (due to high solubility and handling ease)

Common trade names: Dequest 2060, Briquest 543 (Solutia), Unihib 106

Key Applications of DTPMPA:

Scale inhibition (CaCO₃, CaSO₄, BaSO₄)

Corrosion inhibition (especially in high-hardness water)

Chelating agent for metal ions (Fe³⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺)

Oilfield water treatment (squeeze treatments, injection wells)
