What is bile acid chelating agent

Bile acid chelators are a class of drugs, also known as bile acid binders. They are a drug used to treat high cholesterol and hyperlipidemia, which reduces the cyclic absorption of bile acid by chelating with bile acid, thereby promoting the excretion of bile acid and reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.

Cholic acid is a bile component synthesized by the liver, used to aid in the digestion and absorption of fatty foods. Bile acid binders combine with bile acid to form a complex, forming insoluble precipitates that prevent bile acid from being absorbed in the intestine. This will stimulate the liver to synthesize more bile acids and use cholesterol in the body to complete the synthesis process, thereby reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.

Cholic acid chelators are usually used in the form of oral medications, and when combined with other cholesterol lowering drugs (such as statins), they can have a synergistic effect on reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood.

It should be noted that bile acid chelating agents may interact with other drugs during use, affecting their absorption and efficacy. Therefore, when using bile acid chelating agents, it is necessary to strictly follow the doctor's guidance and prescription, and inform the doctor of other medications being used. At the same time, bile acid chelating agents may cause some adverse reactions, such as indigestion, constipation, etc. Please pay close attention to physical reactions during use and report to a doctor in a timely manner.
