Advantages and Disadvantages of Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium Sulfate (THPS)

Core Conclusion: Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS) is a "green biocide" widely recognized in industry due to its high efficiency, low toxicity, and easy degradation. Its main disadvantages lie in its significant acute toxicity to aquatic organisms and specific safety risks during use.

Advantages

Broad-spectrum and Efficient: As a multifunctional organophosphorus compound, it has broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, capable of efficiently inhibiting and killing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), algae, and other microorganisms, with multiple modes of action that reduce the likelihood of resistance development.

Low Toxicity and Easy Degradation: Awarded the "Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award" in 1997. It has significantly lower toxicity to non-target organisms than traditional biocides, is readily biodegradable, does not bioaccumulate, and degrades rapidly upon dilution.

Corrosion Inhibition and Iron Sulfide Dissolution: In addition to sterilization, THPS can form a protective film on metal surfaces to reduce corrosion rates, and effectively dissolve iron sulfide deposits.

Halogen-free and Low Foaming: Does not contain halogens, does not generate dioxins or absorbable organic halides (AOX), and exhibits low foaming characteristics, making it suitable for use in industrial circulating water and oilfield systems.

Broad Applicability: Mainly used in oilfield water injection, industrial circulating cooling water, papermaking white water, textile flame retardant finishing, and other fields.

Disadvantages

High Aquatic Toxicity: Classified as very toxic to aquatic life (H400). It has high acute toxicity to fish (rainbow trout 96h LC50 is 119 mg/L), daphnia (48h LC50 is 19 mg/L), and marine algae (72h EC50 is 0.16 mg/L).

Health Hazards: Toxic if inhaled (H331); causes serious eye damage (H318) and skin irritation; may cause allergic skin reactions (H317).

pH-dependent Performance: Its biocidal efficacy decreases under neutral pH conditions because it converts to less effective tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine oxide (THPO); it is most stable and effective under acidic conditions (pH ~3).

Safety Risks During Handling: It is an acidic solution that may release formaldehyde under heating conditions and may produce flammable dust in powder form. Personal protective equipment (protective glasses, gloves, etc.) must be worn during operation to avoid skin and eye contact.
